Application FAQs

Can I use Minute Mend to repair a leak in my automobile’s gas tank?

No

How do I know which gear oil to use?

Follow the manufacturers recommended viscosity grade and GL rating.

When should I use synthetic gear oils?

Synthetic gear oil should be used when mineral oils can no longer provide protection at high or low temperature extremes, or under very high loads. Synthetic gear oils provide outstanding thermal stability and offer protection under a wide temperature range (400ºF to -40ºF). These properties result in a fluid that does not require it to be changed seasonally. Sta-Lube® Synthetic Gear Oils are offered in the following viscosity ranges: SAE 75W, 80W90, 80W140 and 75W140. When using synthetics in a limited slip differential, be sure to use Sta-Lube®’s Equa-Torque® Differential Friction Modifier or K&W®’s Trans-X® Posi-Trac® Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive.

Can I use Di-Electric grease to seal and lubricate battery terminals and spark plugs?

Yes

Does CRC offer any food grade products?

Yes, CRC offers a wide variety of Food Grade Products. Click the link below to view CRC’s Food Grade Catalog.

Why is it recommended that I clean out any old grease before applying new grease?

Not all greases are compatible. Incompatibility of greases may result in a component failure as a result of significant changes in the chemical and physical properties of the grease.

Product Attribute FAQs

What is SmartWasher®?

CRC’s SmartWasher® Parts Cleaning System is a self-contained, self-cleaning system that is completely safe, non-toxic and generates no hazardous waste. SmartWasher uses the process of bioremediation to clean your parts, allowing the solution to remain clean and usable.

How many gallons of SmartWasher® fluid is needed for start up?

15 to 25 gallons depending on the machine.

How often do I need to replace the filter and SmartWasher® fluid?

Every 4-6 weeks we recommend the filter be replaced and the fluid topped off with 5 gallons.

What does “viscosity grade” and “GL rating” mean?

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has designated a grading system that classifies gear oils by their viscosity. Normally, oils are graded at one temperature (usually 100° C). Winter oils are also graded at -18° C.

When the oil is graded at the lower temperature it is given the suffix “W” (i.e. 80W). Many oils are formulated to meet the requirements of more than one classification. Multi-grade oils are designated by two grade numbers such as 80W90. This number indicates the oils lowest and highest grading.

While viscosity is important, the American Petroleum Institute (API) classification is critical in determining proper gear oil. The API has classified gear lubes (GL) into several categories based on applications, properties and additives. The classifications are GL-1, GL-2, GL-3, GL-4, GL-5 and GL-5* (GL-6 has been replaced by GL-5*).

Vehicle and equipment manufacturers have specific gear oil requirements and viscosity grades. This information should be specified on the gear case or in the service manual.

Is Wasp & Hornet Killer PLUS™ non-conductive?

Yes, up to its di-electric strength of 47,600 volts.

Is Brake Caliper Synthetic Grease safe on rubber parts?

Yes

How often should I change my gear oil?

Follow the manufacturers suggested change intervals. Additionally, if work or repairs are being done to the gear case, it is a good time to change the gear oil. Also, if the last oil change is unknown, as in the case of a used vehicle, it is a good idea to replace the fluids. Remember, you can never change gear oil (or any fluid) too often.

Does CRC offer a friction modifier for gear oils?

Yes, SL2411 – Sta-Lube Equa-Torque™ Differential Friction Modifier and 402508 – Trans-X Trans-X® Posi-Trac Limited Slip Gear Oil Additive.

Why can’t I locate 5-56® anymore?

In 1995, 5-56® was reformulated and renamed Power Lube® Multi-Purpose Lubricant.

Are 2-26® and 3-36® the same?

No. They are both multi-purpose lubricants, however, 2-26® is plastic safe and 3-36 is not.

Why are there so many greases to choose from?

Depending upon the application, different greases, additive packages, and NLGI grades may be required. When in doubt about which grease to use, contact Technical Service and we will assist you in making a selection.

What is the difference between Wasp & Hornet Kill PLUS™ and Bee Blast®?

Bee Blast® has a residual that kills insects returning to the nest.

Does your Compressor Oil (#SL22131 & SL22133) contain detergent?

Yes

Is SP-400™ conductive?

No

Can SP-400™ be diluted?

CRC does not recommend diluting SP-400™. Once diluted the physical properties and corrosion prevention protection are immediately altered. If dilution is absolutely necessary, you may use aliphatic petroleum distillates such as mineral spirits.

Does Power Lube® Multi-Purpose Lubricant contain silicone?

No

Does CRC®/Sta-Lube® offer any conductive greases?

No, CRC does not offer any conductive greases, but we do offer several anti-seizes that are similar to grease and conductive.

Does CRC offer a water based silicone?

Yes, Part #03035 – CRC Water Based Silicone, which is NSF H1 Registered.

Do the CRC silicone products contain petroleum?

CRC silicone products don’t actually contain petroleum, but they do have solvents that help deposit the silicone onto the surface that requires lubrication. Most of the solvents are manufactured using petroleum precursors.
