SmartWasher Frequently Asked Questions

What is BIOREMEDIATION?

The CRC SmartWasher® Bioremediating Parts-Washing Systems utilize a proprietary bioremediation process in parts washers. Bioremediation is the use of biological agents such as MICROBES or plants to break down or neutralize hazardous substances or contaminants thereby removing dangerous chemicals in the environment. The process of bioremediation is listed as one of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) innovative technologies.

How is “Bioremediating” different from “Biodegradable”?

BIOREMEDIATION is the introduction of natural biological agents such as MICROBES to break down or neutralize hazardous substances or contaminants. FOR EXAMPLE: In the CRC SMARTWASHER®, OZZY MICROBES, which are natural biological agents are introduced to break down the carbon-based contaminants (grease and oil cleaned off dirty parts) and through this process, create a harmless by-product of carbon dioxide and water.

BIODEGRADABLE means that a substance or mixture is subject to or could be broken down by biological agents into smaller compounds.

What is BIOREMEDIATION?

The OzzyJuice® degreasing/cleaning solutions, used in the CRC SMARTWASHER®, are non-hazardous, non-flammable, non-corrosive, pH neutral, non-caustic, and aqueous-based. They are not known to cause damage to humans or the environment. Following the specific directions located in the operations manual, and properly using all three parts of the CRC SMARTWASHER system together (the combination of the CRC SMARTWASHER® parts washer, OZZYJUICE® degreasing/cleaning solutions and OzzyMat® which is impregnated with the OZZY MICROBES) the CRC SMARTWASHER® Systems DO NOT create liquid hazardous waste streams leading to potential cradle-to-grave liabilities.

Who and what is Ozzy®?

OZZY is the name we selected for the blend of nonpathogenic (harmless to humans) MICROBES impregnated in the OZZYMAT® particulate trap and used in the CRC SMARTWASHER® system. Our OZZY MICROBES, break down or “eat” potentially harmful hydrocarbon wastes in the CRC SMARTWASHER® and transform these wastes into very small quantities of carbon dioxide and water. Similar types of MICROBES have been used for many years in various bioremediation applications, such as oil spills, including the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the Deep Water Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico.

Does anything kill Ozzy® MICROBES?

YES. Any biocides designed to kill MICROBES, for example bleach and Lysol, will kill OZZY® MICROBES. Also, chemicals that kill living things like strong pesticides and rat poison would also be harmful to the life of OZZY® MICROBES.

What happens to the grease, oil and other contaminants being washed into in the CRC SmartWasher®?

Grease, oil and other contaminants, cleaned off the dirty parts in the CRC SMARTWASHER®, are bioremediated – transformed into harmless, non-hazardous by-products such as carbon dioxide and water. Particulate matter, down to 50 microns in size, such as sand, grit, dirt, or metal chips, are trapped in the white layers of the OZZYMAT®. These white layers of the OZZYMAT® are disposed of once a week to help eliminate the buildup of sludge in the base of the unit.

What do I do if the OzzyMat® clogs up quickly with grease?

The FL-4 OzzyMat® has a total of 4 layers. These layers are intended to be peeled away once a week (for example you could peel off a layer every Friday before you go home for the weekend) which will help eliminate unnecessary clogging. The 4th layer is the last layer of the mat, so on week 4 you will replace this last layer with a brand new OZZYMAT®. You will then begin the layer removal process all over again in the same order; every week dispose of the top OZZYMAT® layer and on the 4th week change and replace with a brand new OZZYMAT®.

How often do I change the OzzyMat®?

You need to change the OZZYMAT® a minimum of once a month or every 30 days. Changing the OZZYMAT® routinely accomplishes three things:

  • It keeps trapped contaminants from reaching hazardous levels.
  • OZZY MICROBES are introduced into the CRC SMARTWASHER® system through the OZZYMAT® so every time you change the OZZYMAT® you introduce fresh, new, young, strong OZZY MICROBES® into the existing microbe colony. The more OZZY MICROBES® you have, the cleaner your OZZYJUICE® will be, and this will keep the system working at an optimum performance level.
  • Changing the OZZYMAT® keeps sludge from building up in the base of the CRC SMARTWASHER® unit. If the OZZYMAT® is not changed regularly, and allowed to become clogged, large contaminants and small particulate can flow into the reservoir via the overflow holes in the sink, potentially causing sludge to build up.
How do I dispose of the OzzyMat®?

The OZZYMAT® must be disposed of in accordance with your Federal, State and local regulations. In many areas, the OZZYMAT® can be disposed of in a non-leaching, manner and disposed of as ordinary solid waste in accordance with the Federal State and local regulations.

How often do I change the fluid (OzzyJuice®)?

If you are changing your OZZYMAT® a minimum of once a month, or every 30 days, under normal use and with proper maintenance, you should never need to change, or haul away used OZZYJUICE®. This is one of the biggest advantages of the CRC SMARTWASHER® system. OZZY MICROBES clean contaminants out of the OZZYJUICE® fluid through the process of bioremediation. This leaves you with clean OZZYJUICE® to work with day after day.

How often do I add OzzyJuice® to the CRC SmartWasher®?

The CRC SMARTWASHER® comes equipped with a low fluid indicator light which illuminates when you are low on fluid. When this light is on simply add (1) 5-gallon container of OZZYJUICE® to bring the fluid level up to normal. On average, with normal use, you will add approximately (1) 5-gallon container of OZZYJUICE® approximately every six to eight weeks.

Can I simply add water to the CRC SmartWasher® to adjust the fluid level?

NO. Adding water will dilute the OzzyJuice®, severely impacting its performance.

How well does OzzyJuice® clean?

OZZYJUICE® is extraordinarily powerful and cleans extremely well. OZZYJUICE® contains a surfactant that breaks down the surface tension between the grease and the part, rather than dissolving it; the grease lifts off the parts leaving behind clean surfaces. Note that while OZZYJUICE® cleans differently than dangerous solvents or mineral spirits, it cleans just as well.

Can I buy OzzyJuice® as a concentrate?

NO. ChemFree pre-blends its degreasing solutions with specially prepared water at the factory. This ensures that only the best quality OZZYJUICE® is put into the CRC SMARTWASHER®. Due to the vast differences in the qualities of water across the country, consistent performance could not be guaranteed if OZZYJUICE® was blended at customer locations.

Can I soak parts in the OzzyJuice® or the CRC SmartWasher®?

NO. Soaking parts in the CRC SMARTWASHER® can cause oxidation (rusting) in some metals, particularly soft metals such as aluminum. After you have completed washing your part(s) in the CRC SMARTWASHER®, ChemFree recommends re-lubricating these clean metal parts or spraying with some type of metal protection (like Power Lube by CRC ) to prevent oxidation from the environment, especially if they will be sitting out, unused for more than 2 hours.

Will OzzyJuice® clean carburetors, transmissions, aluminum, brakes and anything else in my repair shop?

YES. Not only is OZZYJUICE® effective on these parts, but it will not damage non-metal components that might be attached to the parts being cleaned, such as rubber or plastic fittings. As with all parts cleaners, some items are going to become cleaner at different rates than others due to the degree and type of grime encountered.

Why doesn’t OzzyJuice®damage my hands like solvents?

OZZYJUICE® is a pH-neutral, non-caustic, water-based formula that will not dry, crack or irritate the skin. Solvents are caustic and pull fat cells from the skin, possibly causing extreme drying, redness, blisters, and other dermatological problems.

What color should the OzzyJuice® be?

As the OZZYJUICE® is used to clean grease and oil from dirty parts the color of the fluid will become dark. THIS IS NORMAL: while the OZZYJUICE® appears to be “dirty”, it has simply been dyed by the artificial colorings used in greases and oils.

Can I use other fluids in my CRC SmartWasher®?

The CRC SMARTWASHER® parts washing system has been developed to work effectively as a whole and complete system; CRC SMARTWASHER® parts washer, OZZYJUICE® degreasing/cleaning solutions and OZZYMAT® impregnated with OZZY MICROBES. Other solutions may damage the machine or kill OZZY MICROBES, thereby eliminating the advantages of the CRC SMARTWASHER®. The use of other solutions in the CRC SMARTWASHER® will void the warranty.

Can I use OzzyJuice® in other parts washers?

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND OZZYJUICE® BE USED IN OTHER PARTS WASHERS. The OZZYJUICE®, OZZYMAT® and the CRC SMARTWASHER® were made to work together as a system with variables such as specific temperatures, compensation for foam, and so on. Also remember, the OZZY MICROBES are impregnated in the OZZYMAT® not in the OZZYJUICE®. If the OZZYJUICE® is used in another machine it will not have the OZZY MICROBES to remediate or clean out the fluid.

How often do I change the OzzyMat®?

You need to change the OZZYMAT® a minimum of once a month or every 30 days. Changing the OZZYMAT® routinely accomplishes three things:

  1. Heated OZZYJUICE keeps OZZY MICROBES eating at an optimal level to clean the solution as quickly as possible.
  2. Warm OZZYJUICE solution simply cleans better than cold OZZYJUICE solution. An added benefit to warm solution is that it makes it more enjoyable to work with, especially when you have to wash dirty parts during cold winter months.
Can the CRC SmartWasher® overheat if the OzzyJuice®gets low?

NO. The heater is automatically de-activated when the “Add Fluid” indicator light is illuminated. While the pump will continue to operate, the heater will not be reactivated until (1) entire 5- gallon container of OZZYJUICE is added to the system. Once this is done the “Add Fluid” indicator light will turn off.

How quickly can Ozzy® MICROBES break down oil and grease?

Once activated, or wetted with OZZYJUICE, the OZZY MICROBES immediately start breaking down (“eating”) the greases and oils being cleaned off the dirty parts. They also begin reproducing, creating an oil cleaning army that will keep the OZZYJUICE solutions clean. Assuming the system is operating optimally (OZZYJUICE temperature is maintained between 105°F – 115°F, and the OZZYMAT is changed a minimum of every 30 days, or once a month) the rate at which the hydrocarbons can remediate can approach 80% every seven days. Analyses performed on samples of used OZZYJUICE from operating CRC SMARTWASHER systems consistently show oil and grease levels in the 1,400 parts per million range.

BY COMPARISON, the typical, non-bioremediating, water-based parts cleaners can average over 20,000 parts per million of oil and grease.

Is there a warranty for the SmartWasher®?

The SmartWasher® is warranted against defects for one year. For more detailed information, please refer to the warranty section of this manual or visit smartwasher.com.
