How to Clean Throttle Body and Carbon Removal

CRC Throttle Body & Air-Intake Cleaner is a specially designed intake cleaner made for use in the shop or at home. Following a few simple steps, the throttle body will be ready for cleaning.

  1. With engine off, remove air intake duct to expose the throttle body. It may be necessary to remove the MAF sensor.
  2. Place a rag under the throttle body to collect runoff.
  3. Attach straw to spray button. Manually move butterfly valve back-and-forth while spraying; spray initially, stop and allow solvent to penetrate. Then spray again for maximum effect.
  4. Be sure to clean throttle linkages.
  5. Reassemble MAF, air intake duct, and filter.

Trust the makers of high-quality products like Brakleen to get your throttle body clean and your engine running smoothly. CRC Throttle Body and Air-Intake Cleaner is safe for use in fuel injection systems, including cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, and other recreational vehicles. CRC® knows parts cleaning!

How To Tell When Your Throttle Body Needs Cleaning

There are several signs of a dirty throttle body. Recognizing issues early is a critical step to avoiding damage that can’t be reversed - or a costly trip to the mechanic. Look to CRC Throttle Body & Air-Intake Cleaner to tackle the heavy build-up and restore throttle body operation. This throttle body cleaner gets the job done!

A noticeable drop in fuel economy or check engine light is on

A throttle body clogged by grime prevents the engine from running properly. This can create performance issues that affect fuel economy. This can also cause your check engine light to turn on, as the vehicle is designed to let you know something in the engine is not working properly. While there are several reasons the light may come on, cleaning the throttle body is an inexpensive and quick job you can do yourself to solve the issue.

Rough idling, especially after engine start

Rough idle is a common symptom of a clogged throttle body. As dirt builds up in the throttle body, it interferes with airflow and creates problems with the engine pressure. This may result in a rough idle, fluctuating idle speed, or eventual engine stall. Use throttle body spray to break up the clog and get the engine working properly.

Sticky Gas Pedal

Carbon buildup inside the throttle body may affect the function of the butterfly valve. When this occurs, the gas pedal is hard to push or feels like it sticks. Proper throttle-body cleaning will help resolve a sticky accelerator problem by flushing out the tar and gum.
